Reporting & Milestones

Each academic year, PhD students are strictly required to report on their activities and progress. Approval of these reports is a mandatory requirement for admission to the following academic year (for 1st and 2nd-year students) or for submitting the final thesis (for 3rd-year students). Deadlines are typically communicated by the Secretariat about one month in advance. All documents must be uploaded to the official Moodle platform.

The Individual Training Plan

At the beginning of each academic year, you must prepare a Training Plan outlining your proposed research and training activities for the upcoming months.

  • Approval: It must be approved by the Board of Supervisors (Collegio Docenti).
  • Drafting: The plan is prepared under the guidance of your Supervisor. For first-year students, this document must explicitly declare the names of the suggested Supervisor and Co-Supervisor(s).
  • Submission: The template must be downloaded from the Forms & Downloads section, filled out, and uploaded to the PhD Moodle platform.

Annual Report & Video Pitch

In the last part of each course year, you must submit a comprehensive report detailing the activities carried out and the results achieved.

  • Written Report: Must be written in English using the official template and approved by the Executive Committee (Consiglio Direttivo).
  • Video Presentation: Starting from the 37th cohort, you must also submit a short video (max 3 minutes) in the form of a “mini-interview” summarizing your year’s work.
  • Submission: Both the report and the video must be uploaded to the Moodle platform following the Secretariat’s instructions.

The Oral Presentation

Together with your written report, you are required to give a public, oral presentation of your work to an evaluation committee.

  • Language: The presentation must be entirely in English.
  • Structure: You must follow the provided template. Your slides must include: an agenda, a Gantt chart of the full 3-year research plan, a detailed Gantt chart for the upcoming year, and a summary of your results (papers, patents, etc.).
  • Submission: The presentation file must be uploaded to Moodle before the defense.

Graduation Milestones (3rd Year Students Only)

At the end of your three-year journey, the reporting process changes to focus on your final dissertation.

  • Final Report: You must submit a Final Report summarizing all 3 years of activities. For students starting on October 1st, the strict deadline is typically September 6th.
  • Thesis Submission: You will submit your thesis online for evaluation by external reviewers. The thesis can be written in English or Italian, but the Abstract must be in English only. A LaTeX template is available, though not mandatory. Detailed submission instructions will be provided by the Secretariat.
