Master’s degree

The master’s degree provides deep knowledge and skills in the design, production and management of products and systems with high technological and innovative content. It enables the Mechanical Engineer to take over management and R&D positions in the manufacturing industry and related services, with focus on both transversal and vertical skills required to address complex interdisciplinary problems. In the first year, compulsory courses in mechanical disciplines are provided, while in the second year a wide range of elective courses is available (also in English) arranged in 10 specialisations. Many courses include design and experiments in teaching and research laboratories.

Occupational opportunities

The master’s degree opens opportunities in R&D, design and manufacturing of complex mechanical systems, including managerial positions; the multidisciplinary training allows effectiveness and adaptation to companies of different sizes and in diverse business sectors .
A Mechanical Engineer can easily find employment in all main industrial sectors, in engineering offices, and in technical departments of public and private organisations. Typical examples are the design and manufacturing of mechanical components, machines and plants; design of processes for the mechanical and other industry; management of production or design departments; planning and organization of maintenance activities; participation in the executive staff of technical departments, power plants, public utilities or similar companies; employment in engineering offices and in industrial laboratories.
The close collaboration between the University and the manufacturing industries is also demonstrated by the tight collaboration with an Industrial Advisory Boardhaving the role of providing feedback and suggestions on education in Mechanical Engineering at University of Padova with specific reference to the skills required by ever evolving industrial system. The Advisory Board includes representatives of well established companies operating in the field of Mechanical Engineering (Aermec, Aprilia, Askoll, Carl Zeiss IMT, Carraro, Dainese, De Pretto, Electrolux, Ferrari Gestione Sportiva, Fiamm, LivaNova, Luxottica, Marposs, SIT, Wartsilia Italia). Every two years the Advisory Board discusses with the Board of Professors the competences and skills that a mechanical engineer must possess in order to successfully face the challenges of the industry.

EUR-ACE accreditation

The master’s degree has obtained the EUR-ACE accreditation (European Network for the Accreditation of Engineering Education) that identifies high-quality engineering degree programmes in Europe and in the world. These standards have been established taking into account the point of views of all key stakeholders: students, universities, employers, professional organizations and accreditation agencies. Accreditation was achieved because the master’s degree meets high standards of: organization, scientific quality of professors, level of students satisfaction regarding the skills acquired and the technical quality of employment. This is recognized by employers throughout Europe and also guarantees students the acquisition of the EUR ING degree.

Teaching staff

The professors have a relevant teaching and scientific research experience, which is implemented through consolidated collaborations both with Italian and foreign companies and with prestigious international research groups.

Access

Direct access to the master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering takes place from the Educational Curriculum of the bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering of University of Padova.
