Training Guidelines & Requirements
Cycle 39 • MANDATORY Targets
20 CFU
15 CFU
6 Seminars
1. The Credit System
The training activities are quantified in CFU (University Training Credits).
- Standard Value: 1 CFU corresponds to 25 hours of total workload.
- Workload Composition: For standard doctoral courses, this is calculated as 4 hours of frontal lectures and 21 hours of individual study.
- Professional Courses: For courses organized by professional associations, 1 CFU corresponds to 6 hours of class.
2. Mandatory Requirements
To be admitted to the final thesis defense, doctoral candidates of Cycle 39 must fulfill the following requirements over the three-year duration:
- Total Credits: Completion of at least 20 CFU through catalogued courses.
- Intermediate Deadline: At least 15 CFU must be acquired within the first two years of the programme.
Seminars: Attendance of at least 6 Seminars in total during the three-year period (chosen from the ones proposed by the PhD Course or the Department).
3. External Activities & Limits
Candidates may acquire credits by attending external schools or courses, subject to the following limits:
- Summer/Winter Schools: A maximum of 12 CFU can be recognized from national or international schools (calculated as 1 CFU per 4 hours of class).
- University Master Degree Programme: A maximum of 12 CFU can be obtained by attending Master-level courses (Laurea Magistrale), provided they are not part of the student’s previous curriculum.
- Soft Skills: Language courses and soft skills courses are typically assigned 0 (zero) credits, though their attendance is encouraged for personal development.
4. Authorization & Exams
- Assessment: To acquire credits, passing a final exam is mandatory. Sole attendance is not sufficient for credit recognition.
- Authorization: Any training activity not included in the authorized Course Plan must be authorized in advance by the Supervisor, before being approved by the Advisory Board at the beginning of the subsequent year.

- Workload Composition: For standard doctoral courses, this is calculated as 5 hours of frontal lectures and 20 hours of individual study.
- Professional Courses: For courses organized by professional associations, 1 CFU corresponds to 6 hours of class.
2. Mandatory Requirements
To be admitted to the final thesis defense, doctoral candidates of Cycle 40 must fulfill the following requirements over the three-year duration:

- University Master Courses: attending Master-level courses (Laurea Magistrale) is not admitted anymore.
- Soft Skills: Language courses and soft skills courses are typically assigned 0 (zero) credits, though their attendance is encouraged for personal development.
4. Authorization & Exams

Cycle 41 • Mandatory Targets
16 CFU
3 Seminars
18 CFU
1. The Credit System (CFU)
The PhD Programme adopts the CFU (Crediti Formativi Universitari) system to quantify the training workload.
- Standard Value: 1 CFU corresponds to 25 hours of total workload.
- Workload Composition: For standard doctoral courses, this is calculated as 5 hours of frontal lectures plus 20 hours of individual study and assessment preparation.
2. Mandatory Requirements (Three-Year Plan)
To be admitted to the final thesis defense, doctoral candidates enrolled in the 41st cycle must fulfill the following requirements over the three-year duration:
- Doctoral Courses (Internal): Completion of a minimum of 16 CFU through catalogued courses provided by the PhD Programme or the Department. This should include a balance of hard skills (technical) and soft skills.
- Seminars: Attendance of at least 3 Seminars during the PhD programme.
- Research: Continuous full-time research activity as defined by the individual project.
3. External Activities & Limits
Candidates may acquire credits by attending external Winter/Summer Schools or courses at other institutions. However, specific restrictions apply:
- Authorization: Participation must be pre-authorized by the Coordinator or the Academic Board before the activity begins.
- Maximum Limit: A maximum of 3 CFU total can be recognized from external activities over the entire three-year cycle. Any credits exceeding this limit will not contribute to the mandatory requirements.
4. Yearly Progression & Evaluation
Passage to the subsequent academic year is not automatic. At the end of each year (typically in September/October), candidates must submit:
- A Yearly Report detailing research progress and training activities.
- Updated Monitoring Sheets proving the acquisition of the required credits.
- A Public Presentation of their work to official commissions per each curriculum.
